For many Texas high schools, football plays an integral part in the campus community and the school spirit among students. This year has been undoubtedly one of the most remarkable football seasons yet, comprising breakthroughs after arduous challenges. Statistically, Lamar’s Varsity Football team ranked first in the 6A Region III District 18 and stands well above the national average, with a final record of 8-4. However, underneath it all lies the pressure to rebound from painful losses that create a psychological battleground, more challenging than any opponent. As echoed by numerous players, there is more to a game than physical strength and teamwork. Mentality, leadership, rapport, and even previous losses have been found to be paramount throughout Lamar’s football run. These factors are what made this year so distinct compared to prior seasons, and something many hope to lead into the next season.
A harsh start to the season began against Atascocita with Lamar suffering a devastating 48-28 loss. Senior four-year lineman Douglas Colburn acknowledges, “Our collective responses to called plays and formations were not as precise as planned,” citing struggles like remaining poised after minor mistakes and maintaining strong lines of communication. “I still refused to quit on any of my teammates,” Colburn adds, showing how the mental battle on the field proved to be tougher than the physical one. Under head coach Michael Lindsey’s guidance, the team was able to reinforce their “next play” mentality. This strategy commands players to not drag their mistakes and focus on exceeding the next game. “If the previous play didn’t go our way, then we wouldn’t let it affect our next play,” Colburn explains. This teaching taught players that it’s not about how they start, but rather about how they finish — but the fight wasn’t over yet.
However, getting a single win was not easy, with the first three battles fought resulting in overwhelming defeats losses for the team. Junior Seth Lim, who became a starter this year, states that his peers quickly began losing hope, but their momentum built-up instead. Lim concedes that suffering defeat forced the team to learn from their mistakes. “For me, I was not accurately snapping the ball back to my quarterback, so I relentlessly practiced on the sidelines,” reflects Lim. This steered him and his teammates to reset and straighten their minds for their next opponent.
The turning point of the season revealed itself to be within their fourth game, facing Alief Elsik, emerging as their first win of 38-7. This was accomplished by deploying the “next play” strategy, improvisation to perform at their best, and support from the student section. Lim acknowledges, “I feel blessed to witness the spirit of the school community.” It ultimately drove Lamar Football to their eight consecutive wins across the next three months.
Winning against top rivals such as Bellaire, Heights, and Cy-Fair has proved to demonstrate the resilience and progress that the team made over the course of the fall semester, with many hoping for these achievements to carry over into next year’s varsity team. The chemistry amongst the young men is something that cannot be easily replicated, with many players celebrating each other’s victories as their own. Universally agreed upon by upperclassmen, many have described RB Junior Kaze Bryant scoring his first touchdown against Summer Creek as a testament to his, and accordingly, to their hard work. Despite losing the final playoff game to Strake Jesuit, the team grew more united than ever. This sense of pride and brotherhood is what makes Lamar Football standout, remaining as a constant regardless of how much the roster evolves.
The 2025 football season has also featured an array of full circle moments for their fourth-year members. Seniors made playoffs during their inaugural year, serving as a sentimental reminder of the journey from freshman to leaders. In their final season in high school, these players led the team back toward the same level of success. This triumph envisioned how everything came back together at the end of their high school career. Nevertheless, credit must be given where credit is due. From the unwavering support of the student body to the strong-willed coaches and lineup, the coordination behind this season places Lamar Football at the height of their excellence.
